SUMMARY:Imported Bridegroom
DESCRIPTION:A ROMANTIC MUSICAL COMEDY SPOTLIGHTING THE CONFLICTS AND AFFECTIONS OF JEWISH IMMIGRANTS TO AMERICA AND THEIR AMERICAN BORN CHILDREN.\nBased on a story by Abraham Cahan Book and Lyrics by Pamela BergerMusic by Hankus NetskyAdditional music by:Joanne Baker & Pamela Berger Director: Avi HoffmanArtistic Director: Pamela BergerChoreographer: Oren KorenblumMusic Director: Mark YorkLighting Designer: Josh Martinez-DavisSet Designer: Qingan ZhangCostume Designer: Quinn BurgessProducer/General Manager: Gabriel Szjanert Cast:Avi Hoffman as AsrielMia Mclain as FloraYochai Greenfeld as ShayaMary Feinsinger as Mrs. Birnbaum Ensemble:Daniel BarrettElmore JamesDaniella Rabbani Sirkin  In the tradition of the rollicking old-fashioned American musical comedy\, here comes “Imported Bridegroom: The Musical.” Set in Olde New York circa 1900\, “Imported Bridegroom: The Musical” recounts the travails of an acquisitive landlord-father who comes to fear that his greedy practices will keep him out of heaven. He is so overcome with anxiety at his other-worldly fate that he feels compelled to return to the Old Country where\, at his father’s gravesite\, he pleads: “Papa\, speak to the Almighty for me and ask Him please to wipe away just a few of my sins.” There\, in his ancestral shtetl\, he is informed of a shortcut to eternal residence in the better neighborhood of Heaven. He would need to sponsor a brilliant scholar of the Talmud. Finding what seems the perfect candidate\, he brings his pious young discovery back to the lower East Side for his ambitious Americanized daughter to marry. After one look at the intense greenhorn scholar\, she is appalled. He has nothing in common with the sort of respectable uptown Jewish doctor she has been planning to capture. A musical comedy ensues.

This one-woman show starring Alexis Fishman was performed Off-Broadway to rave reviews. It is a reimagining designed to force us to view an iconic story that we thought we knew through entirely fresh eyes\, leading us to question certain dear-held assumptions. \nIt poses the basic question: Had Anne known precisely what was in store for her and her family at the hands of the Nazis\, would she still have written the famous line: ‘In spite of everything\, I still believe that people are really good at heart’? \nThe play takes place within three ‘worlds’: The world of the secret annex\, where Anne and her family are hiding from their German occupiers – this is the story we all know\, though it is now retold in hindsight. The world of the concentration camp – Bergen-Belsen – where Anne and her sister\, Margot\, ended their days. And an imagined world where Anne goes over the manuscript of her diary with her editor at a publishing house in Manhattan after the war. \nBut\, at great personal cost\, she has\, with her devastating new insight into the depths of human depravity\, rewritten her entire diary\, so that she is constantly having to justify her choices to her editor\, who dearly wishes to maintain the purity and innocence of the original. \nThis event contains adult language or content.

SUMMARY:ANNE BEING FRANK\, A New Play by Ron Elisha
DESCRIPTION:ANNE BEING FRANK\, A NEW PLAY BY RON ELISHA\nPRESENTED BY YI LOVE JEWISH\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOWINGS\n\n\n\n\nTue\, NOV 12\, 2024 – 7:30 PM\n\n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\n\n\n\nVENUE: Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University\nPRICE: Seats $57.00\nAVAILABILITY: Buy Tickets Now\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with YI Love Jewish. \n‘Anne Being Frank’\, a new play by Ron Elisha\, is a total reimagining of the story of Anne Frank.

SUMMARY:FREE LIVE Concert Performance of 1924 Silent Film “The City Without Jews
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live cine-concert performance of the silent film The City Without Jews (Die Stadt ohne Juden)\, accompanied by original live music composed and performed by world-renowned klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and celebrated silent film pianist Donald Sosin. This special event will be held at the Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami on January 14\, 2025\, at 4:00 PM. \nBased on the controversial and best-selling novel by Hugo Bettauer\, H.K. Breslauer’s 1924 film adaptation of The City Without Jews (Die Stadt ohne Juden) was produced two years after the publication of the book\, only a decade before events depicted in the fictional story became an all-too-horrific reality. Set in the imaginary city of Utopia\, the story follows the consequences of an anti-semitic law passed by the National Assembly forcing all Jews to leave the country. Conceived as a dark satire and stylistically influenced by German Expressionism\, the film contains starkly realistic and eerily prophetic sequences. \nThought to be lost to history entirely\, a partial fragment of the film was discovered in 1991 and a nitrate print with additional footage was restored by the Austrian Film Archive in 2015\, making it possible to see this all to relevant film. \nEvent Details: \n\nDate and Time: January 14\, 2025\, at 4:00 PM\nLocation: Bill Cosford Cinema\, University of Miami\n5030 Brunson Drive\, Coral Gables\, FL 33146\n\nSpecial Acknowledgements: Flicker Alley and The Sunrise Foundation for Education and the Arts has contributed toward the artist fee\, making it possible for this exceptional performance to be presented at the University of Miami. Additional co-sponsorship includes but is not limited to: the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies\, the University of Miami School of Communication\, Yiddishkayt Initiative\, The Miami Jewish Film Festival\, Miami-Dade County\, Florida Humanities and our generous sponsors including Marc A. Levin. \nTicket Information: For ticket reservations\, please register online at https://events.miami.edu/event/cine-concert-film-screening
